Soccer undefeated run at home
By Amy Bell Kwallek • November 1, 2007 • Category: SportsThe UW-Platteville men’s soccer team continued their undefeated home campaign when they shut out Finlandia University 17-0 on Senior Day on Oct. 28.
The Pioneers improved their overall record to 11-6-1 on the season and have only one home game left in the regular season.
” Our preparation for the game and our overall team work really contributed to our success,” Mike McManus, sophomore midfielder, said.
Finlandia’s trap defense could not stop the Pioneers’ offense as they scored goal after goal in the first half to lead 12-0 going into the second half.
” We knew they didn’t have the best record on the season, but we still needed to keep possession, which we did, and that gave us a lot of easy scoring opportunities,” Eric Christensen, junior midfielder, said.
The Pioneers were able to substitute a lot of different players in the second half and continued to score five more goals en route to a school record-breaking 17-0 victory.
” We really stood out as a team today,” Ben Terpening, junior forward, said. “It was nice to get everyone off the bench and play as a team.”
The Pioneers’ 17 goals came from 14 different players, and freshman forward Mitch Cornelius had a hat trick.
” It was an overall team effort,” Tyler Holle, sophomore midfielder, said. “Everyone got in, and everyone got to play.”
The Pioneers also played two games on the road last week which they split with a win over Luther College in overtime 1-0 on Oct. 24, with the only goal coming from Brian
Gottschlich, and a 3-0 loss to Wartburg College on Oct. 25.
Next, the Pioneers take on Beloit College at home on Oct. 31. They are looking for an undefeated home record this year.
” It would be nice to remain undefeated at home and give the seniors a nice goodbye,” McManus said.
