Kill the apathy, be a fan
By Peter Schmidtknecht • November 1, 2007 • Category: OpinionsAnother winter sports season is upon us and one question immediately comes to mind, where’s your fanhood? UW-Platteville has some of the best athletic teams in the WIAC conference, and how many people out there can honestly say that they have been to a single Pioneer athletic event?
People seem to have an apathetic attitude toward these teams because they see it as a waste of time to have pride in student-athletes. Pioneer athletes put in long hours in and out of season to make sure they are successful.
For many of these athletes their days start early with dreaded early morning classes because they have to accommodate team meetings, practices and tutoring sessions. We’ve all been there with early classes, but can you imagine doing it all four years? Sounds fun, right?
The effort these student-athletes put in warrants our effort to get out there and see them play in their games and matches.
The crowd at many athletic events on this campus is almost pathetic considering other schools in the WIAC consistently have large crowds of students in many of the same sports.
So, what I am trying to say is not that you should blow off studying for that midterm because you need to go a Pioneer sporting event, but instead of watching that rerun of Seinfeld for the twelfth time, get off your butt and go to a game. The O -Zone makes it to all men’s and women’s basketball games and they will be loud and proud starting with the Pioneer Tip Off on Nov. 16-17.
Are you being the best Pioneer fan you can be? If you answered no, you know what to do.
