More than just another show opens at UW-P this weekend

Students and faculty are taking audiences on a tour through musical theater history in the UW-Platteville original production “Another Opening, Another Show.” The production is a musical review, written in a workshop concept under the direction of faculty members Ann Farrelly and Susan Savage Day.

“We each get to be an artist” Hilary Buttikofer, senior music major and cast member, said, “Instead of doing the scene of the show, we perform the songs how we interpret them.”

The show is divided into themes of musical history with each theme having its own act. George Gershwin operas of 1920s and 1930s to the big name musicals of the 1940s and 1950s like “My Fair Lady” make up the first act.

The cast devotes the second half to the American musical and film composer, Steven Sondheim. Sondheim is responsible for shows such as “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” “Sweeney Todd” and many others.

The next act showcases great musicals such as “Les Miserables” and “The Phantom of the Opera,” and the night ends with a showcase of relatively modern shows such as “RENT,” “Wicked” and “Spam-a-lot”.

“The whole show is amazing,” Bryan Kerian, junior music major and a member of the cast, said. “With how diverse it is, it’s a wonderful tour through music history.”

The opening performance of “Another Opening, Another Show” was at 11 a.m. Oct. 24. The rest of the performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday Oct. 25-28.

“I am used to a couple months of practice, and here it’s only been two weeks,” Kris Delgado, freshman music major and a cast member, said

The cost for the show is $5 for children, seniors and students who show their UW-P ID. Faculty tickets cost $6 and general admission tickets cost $7. All tickets can be bought at the UW-P Center for the Arts ticket office.

“We really wanted to create something new,” Day said. “I can’t imagine people not finding something they like in the show.”
