Soccer loses after five straight wins
By Tony Schlafli • October 4, 2007 • Category: SportsThe UW-Platteville mens soccer team split a pair of games last week, dominating the Coe College Kohawks and then falling to the Duhawks of Loras College.
The Pioneers played impressively at home on Sept. 25 for Youth Soccer Night, netting a 6-1 victory against the Kohawks from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
“Coe is a rival, and every time we play them, it’s a tough match, so we were just looking to come out strong right away and dominate in the beginning,” Eric Christensen said.
Brian Gottschlich started the scoring for the Pioneers on an assist by Dan Howard after 30 minutes of play.
Almost five minutes later, Christensen added the second goal of the game off of a centering pass from Ben Terpening.
Keith Gronke finished the scoring in the first half with a shot to the left corner of the net from 28 yards out.
Going into the half with a 3-0 lead, the Pioneers dominated the Kohawks for the first 45 minutes of play, and they would continue to dominate throughout the second half.
Eight minutes into the second half, Terpening scored the fourth goal of the game; however, the Kohawks would answer back with a goal of their own by Yusuke Okada.
Mitch Cornelius and Tyler Holle finished the scoring for the Pioneers with the final two goals of the game.
Goalkeeper Kris Bosshart earned the win for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers out-shot the Kohwaks 29-4 with Terpening and Holle each accounting for six shots apiece.
“We wanted to keep up our winning streak so we could roll into our Loras game,” Devin Wallace said.
However, the men’s five-game win streak did not last long as the Duhawks upset the Pioneers 4-1 on Sept. 30.
“We played with them all game but couldn’t execute set plays and didn’t watch the two players coach warned us about; they both scored,” Wallace said.
Terpening managed a goal with just over 20 minutes left in the game, but it was not enough to reverse the tide.
The win against the Pioneers marked the ninth straight for the Duhawks, who currently hold a record of 10-0-1 on the season.
“They are ranked 15th nationally, so we knew it was gonna be tough,” Christensen said. “Their goals went in and ours didn’t.”
After 10 games, the men’s record stands at 7-3. The Pioneers’ next game will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7 against Carleton College.
