Students prepare for 41st annual Career Fair
By Amanda Harguth • September 28, 2007 • Category: NewsThe 41st annual fall Career Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 28 in the Williams Fieldhouse Gymnasium.
One hundred fifty-eight companies are registered to attend.
“All students should attend the career fair. It is a wonderful opportunity and everyone should take advantage of it,” Diana Trendt, career consultant for UW-Platteville, said.
Students will be able to attend the career fair throughout the day. The career fair can help juniors and seniors with finding co-ops, internships and job opportunities, and it can also help freshman decide on a major and become interested in things they never knew they would be interested in beforehand, Trendt said.
The career fair dress for the day is business casual because the companies do look at students’ appearances. It is also beneficial to bring along a resume, so when talking to employees of the companies attending, they can look at a student’s accomplishments.
The majority of companies attending are engineering firms, but there are also many companies from different fields. Some companies will be putting on informational sessions before and after the career fair.
The information for these sessions is on the UW-P career center Web site, http://www.uwplatt.edu/careercenter.
Some of the companies have recruiters who are alumni of UW-P and will be wearing an extra badge to indicate it.
Students are encouraged to go and talk to them, because all the recruiters at the career fair are more than willing to help out students. The main objective for going to the career fair is to meet recruiters, build networks and discuss career plans.
“ The career fair is very helpful and answers many questions students might have with a direct response from many of the employers,” Amanda Martin, a junior who has attended three career fairs said. “Take an hour out of your busy day for one day in the fall and you will get an upper hand of jobs in the future.”
Many professors tell their students to attend as freshman because they can ask many questions, and all the places that are looking for new employees are in the same place for a whole day.
The career fair has and will continue to help many UW-P students with finding future opportunities.
