Questioning ethics of article

I believe the article on Jill Uppena was extremely inappropriate in its timing and content. The article should be based on the passing of Jill Uppena. If you want to write another article on how suicide is a major problem and how it has happened twice this year on campus, that’s fine, but your article was about Jill. An appropriate title would be Greek Community mourns loss.

The lone word “again” to me is wrong.

The timing of this article is also wrong. I know it comes out on Thursdays and you want to get the story out quickly, but show some respect. The day the article comes out, she is still being mourned. The Gamma Phis, after a rough week, have to read about this on the front page and see every little detail on how and why she did it. Let the article be in the paper the following week.

When someone commits suicide, they are mourned and remembered for all the great things they have done. Their obituary would appear in the local paper and it would state when they died, relatives they left behind, hobbies and generally, the great things about the person. It’s not going to state how they did it or where they got the weapon. How about interviewing more friends? She was in a sorority, and although the greeks chose not to comment, there are countless memories to be shared.

You talked to her adviser, a friend and Richard Egley. He really knew the facts that you craved. You couldn’t wait on a comment from one Greek who will miss Jill. I am sure, once they’ve completed the mourning process, they would have plenty to say about her beautiful smile and her love of animals. It is wrong that you mentioned the cold hard facts in such a sad case like this. I am appalled that I read this on the night where I hugged her family and gave my condolences. I believe that they would rather have an article on Jill’s great life and not on how she took it.
